Okanagan Lake

Concord Grape Leaves

Rt. 97 North to Kelowna is breathtaking for any newcomer to British Columbia.

The summer months bring long trails of cars behind each rambling (and rubber-necking) RV on the road.

Okanagan Lake is 84 miles long, and between 1 and 3 miles wide--a Mecca for summer fun.

Late July gifts us with juicy peaches, nectarines and apricots.

On Monday evening I stopped by an orchard nearby to see the fruit, and asked a Sikh man working there for permission to photograph the trees.

He thought for a moment, and then agreed, but as I gathered my camera equipment, I saw him check his face in my car's side mirror.

Then I understood: he wanted me to take his picture!

After a couple of shots, I showed him the LCD screen, and he excitedly gave me the two nectarines in his hands.

Sikh families cultivate a large portion, if not the majority, of the Okanagan Valley orchards.

Until next time...
