Baltimore Windows

USS Constellation

I love exploring a city on foot, with my camera in hand. Though, I must say I was ready for a break after carrying my ten pound tripod for a few hours.

This is Baltimore... A city I know little about, except that it is the birthplace, and current residence, of my dad.

The famous U.S.S. Constellation is now a floating museum in the Inner Harbor. It rides high in the water without its iron canons, anchor and keel weights that used to be its ballast (the waterline should be where the blue meets the black along the ships hull).

The guns, now of fiberglass, still make a formidable site, and one shot made me jump when I was quietly composing.

Maryland Capitol

The State Capitol of Maryland lies in the heart of downtown Baltimore, almost swallowed up by modern buildings around it.

Quiet residential streets and bustling business sections are mere blocks away from each other, while low and high rent buildings seem comfortable side by side.

My father and I learned that the famous B&O Railroad became the dominant road to Ohio only after beating out it's competition--the B&O Canal.

The canal, whose construction was inspired by George Washington, provided transportation from Baltimore, and the Chesapeake Bay, across the mountains by locks, to the Ohio River.

The Railroad took a similar route and, with a little political and economic maneuvering, managed to squelch the competition with its new technology.

Until next time...

Take care,
Todd
