Last February a year ago I was in Ecuador for the first time.
The land is dotted with volcanoes, both active and extinct, and is filled with otherworldly scenes like this volcanic crater lake. |
Guided by my friends, Gary and Merri Scott, who teach an import/export course there, I was exposed to many local artists and craftsmen of the highest caliber.
Old world techniques passed down from generation to generation through extensive apprenticeship are still actively being used today in Ecuador. |

The colonial Spanish brought the guild system from Europe many centuries ago and trained the Ecuadorians in all the techniques of European craftsmanship.
Now that many of their own handcrafts and guilds have been lost, Europeans, and others throughout the world, are turning to Ecuador for specialty, hand-made items. |
Incan relics can be found in museums and private collections throughout Ecuador. The artistry of these ancient people is as apparent in their work as it is today in the modern work of their ancestors.
In their import/export course, Gary and Merri introduce everyone directly to the craftsmen of Ecuador, helping both Ecuadorians and foreigners make a fair profit from so many outstanding Ecuadorian products.

I now print my greeting cards in Ecuador, and have been extremely happy with the quality of work.
Whether you go for business or pleasure, I can think of no better way to see this country than with Gary and Merri Scott.

Until next time...
Have a great week!
