I didn't expect to find serious sailing in the interior of British Columbia, a province known for its mountains.
In fact, when the Vernon Yacht Club Charity Regatta started on Sunday I was contenting myself with photos of sails reflecting on a calm lake.
But it was only the calm before a storm—soon the boats were tearing past me on all sides. |
The Vernon Yacht Club somehow must have known about this storm and planned the race to coincide!
The sailors showed excitement at the wild wind and no one seemed to mind the rain.

Up and back the sailors raced, with masts at 45°.
To my untrained eye, boats barely seemed to miss colliding as they pushed to reach the finish.
|
I couldn't hear what was said when one boat overtook another, but it seems that there were smiles and a wave or two to share the fun of flying down the lake.
Ah, to be at the helm of a sailing ship! |

Nothing can compare to the feeling of the wind and spray, and the way the boat responds to the rudder and the sail!
I hope to have a chance to sail a bit myself this summer—and I hope that you do too.
