I spent the afternoon on Tuesday driving down Rt. 97, stopping at every fruit stand along the way.
In an age of computer-based graphic design, it was refreshing to see these hand-painted signs luring travelers from the highway.
|
At one place I created a bit of a stir when I set up my tripod near an unpicked orchard whose trees were laden with fruit.
No sooner had I framed the first shot when I was surrounded by four or five other tourists aiming their cameras alongside me.
Heads were definitely turning as cars drove by us on the road. |

What is it about a fruit stand?
There is something appealing about these quaint little stores.
Maybe it's because they're not big business. You can often talk to the owner of the orchard and hear the story of this year's crop.
|
Or maybe it's the lack of plastic wrap on everything that makes me feel at ease.
Is it the fact that the fruit is usually very fresh and locally grown?
Or is it the open air that makes these stands so great? |

It's almost like the way it must have been so many years ago.
Local people selling local things long before the franchise was invented.
By the way, that apricot just to the left was an especially tasty one! |
