Orange and red Japanese maple leaves at Butchart Gardens

I first heard of Butchart Gardens, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, almost two decades ago.

Last weekend I fulfilled my long-term desire to see it, arriving at the peak of autumn, its Japanese garden in full glory.

It was an overcast day, with scattered showers and no wind—perfect weather for photography—not too many people and lots of saturated colors.

It was awesome to see what nature and humans could produce together.

No need to touch a thing...

Each leaf somehow landed perfectly on ferns or moss and, in one case, I found a maple leaf suspended by a spider's thread.

Each step along the path revealed a layered richness that almost forced us all to stop and stop again.

Inching through the garden, we lost track of time.

In the fast-paced world in which we live it's worth finding time for places such as this.

In a few short hours my mind forgot the pressing worries that I had brought with me.

There is a slight chance that I will still print the 2009 calendars if there is enough interest. Please fill out this three question survey right away.
