Ted Kefalinos prepares a poppy seed danish at Lafayette French Pastry in New York.

My favorite thing about New York is its apparently infinite supply of charming places for photography.

Lafayette French Pastry caught my eye when I was sent there on an errand by my mother.

This tiny shop at 26 Greenwich Ave. has just enough room for baking and displaying all its pastries,
without an extra inch to spare.

Ted Kefalinos, the baker, works hard to keep his shelves stocked with delightful sweets of every kind.

Coissants right out of the oven at Lafayette French Pastry.

Éclairs and croissants freshly made on site cannot compare to pastries shipped from who knows where, so many weeks ago.

Ted learned to bake from his father, and my step-father remembers Ted in the bake shop as a boy.

For me it was a privilege to see him work behind the scenes, effortlessly rolling out tray after tray of exotic baking that I could only dream of making.

How many subtle points of preparation must he know to make each treat come out so beautifully?

I could lose myself in every cookie bin and every tray of real whipped cream.

But now I have a reason to come back, the next time I'm in New York.
