Sunrise on the mountains just outside my door

If you live in North America, you know first hand that winter's really here this week.

From the West Coast to the East Coast, snowstorms and arctic temperatures have inspired both our fascination and our scorn.

We love and hate the snow and ice. It makes life challenging, but also fun.

For me, I fought cold toes and fingers while I stood in awe of frosty scenes.

Ice plates on lake Skaha
Frozen grapes still on the vine

I found myself drawn out from home to explore these frozen lakes and walk these snowy lanes.

The mind somehow forgets the cold when captivated.

The same sun which gave the grape its energy to sprawl in all directions, only meekly glanced off frozen fruit left on the vine.

I watched first hand as a lake began to freeze and marveled in the mountainside reflected there.

I stood on a hilltop as the rising sun revealed topography that I had never really seen before.

A lake begins to freeze and partially reflects the mountainside.
Early morning sunlight shows the contours of this snowy ridge.

And all week I hummed, as I shivered in the frosty air, that this year Christmas would be white.

If you celebrate Christmas, I hope that yours is very merry, and also very white.
