When I stepped inside of Paramount Music store in Kelowna, BC, my eyes were greeted with a smorgasbord of shapes and textures—finely finished surfaces inviting me to explore.
Even if I didn't understand that these instruments make music, their forms alone would captivate me.

I wish I had been there when they came up with the violin's ornate design. What fanciful ideas did they have in mind when they conceived it?
And how could any sound from it live up to the beauty of the instrument's appearance?
For me music is a world unto its own, and musicians speak a language I can only relish from afar. |

What would it be like to speak music as fluently as my mother tongue?
How does the drummer keep a steady rhythm without missing beats or adding them the way I do?
How do the flautists and guitarists know exactly where to move their fingers without looking? And fast?
It's miraculous to me!

Yet there are many fluent in this art of self-expression.
A steady stream of customers came through the music store while I was there.
Some were beginners and some were very skillful, but all were passionate about the music they could play. |

The friendly, helpful atmosphere at Paramount Music seems to have made it a central place for musicians in Kelowna.
Even with my lack of music knowledge, it was a pleasure talking with the owner, Gary Lipsett, and his assistant, Ed.
They were simply fun to be with. |
