the view looking west from Figureroa mountain

For as long as I can remember, my mother and father have told me of endless fields of California wildflowers.

This week, at age 38, I finally saw them for myself.

About 30 miles east of Santa Barbara, a winding road takes us up to Figureroa Mountain.

In the lower valleys, blue lupines spread themselves across the fields, tempting us to stay and end our journey here.

But as we climb, orange California poppies join the mix, making music with their colors.

How does nature know that blue and gold go together perfectly?

All of us are simply captivated.

I can barely hear my eight year old friend, Jasmine, when she calls me from across the field to see these two blossoms growing intertwined.

And none of us can think of leaving as we sit and drink up all the perfumed air.

But as the light grows low we descend again to earth and admire everything with our new eyes.

These flowers are the autumn leaves of California.
