The winding road of the coastal highway 101

In case you hadn't guessed it, I'm driving from Washington to LA along the winding, Pacific coastal highway.

The view above is the very northwestern tip of Oregon, where the Columbia River empties into the Pacific.

Further down the coast at low tide, the locals wander out to harvest oysters while hopeful gulls look on.

The coast is varied, rocky and dramatic.

Cliffs along the Oregon Coast

How many times have I balanced my car precariously in the narrow space between the white line of the road and the crumbling edge of the cliffs to get a peek at what's below?

Sometimes it's just open space.

Sometimes I find sea lions soaking up the warmth of rocks, and barking just the way my dad used to imitate them when I was young.

Strong winds beat the surf along the coast of Oregon.

In almost every case, I find some scene worth stopping for.

And while I stand and gawk, the same bicyclers who have been leapfrogging me all day go whizzing by again.
