Redwoods and Ferns

The first thing that impressed me when I walked into the redwood forest was the profound sense of silence there.

Maybe it was my own silence as I stood in awe of those great trees.

Or maybe it was the fact that such huge monuments were erected over hundreds of years without so much as a peep out of them.

When something towers over me like the redwood trees, I feel respect.

But when I think that these trees grew this high without any grunting and groaning, simply riding on the laws of nature, my appreciation doubles.

Effortless action is the pinnacle of power in my book.

Earth and water are effortlessly carried skyward through the tree as sunlight transforms itself to matter.

What effort can there be in simple physical phenomena?

Only humans have this notion that it's I who does it.

Without "I" where is the effort? Life follows its own course naturally.

I only make an effort when I'm trying to take credit for what's naturally happening, or when I'm trying to be something that I'm not.
