Not long after leaving the Lost Coast I began to notice unusual, low clouds gathering over the Pacific.
It took a little while before it dawned on me that it was the famous fog of Central California.
|
Sure enough, it wasn't long before my suspicions were confirmed.
The road I'd grown to depend upon was no longer easy to find. In fact, it was reduced at times to nothing but imagination.

As I continued southward, traffic started building, and soon my two lane road became a freeway.
Out of nowhere appeared a bridge so huge and beautiful that I had to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming.
Crossing over, I discovered a city as charming as any you'll ever want to see. |
Each building seemed as if it were a living painting balanced on a hill that overlooked the bay.
The soft light on the clean facades stirred a distant feeling of being home. I only wished that I didn't have to hurry on. |

As I headed south and left the sound of city traffic far behind, my faithful friend the fog continued with me.
Looking back, I wonder if I'll ever know for sure whether that city in the fog is real, or if somehow I created it from thin air while I drove.
