lotus flower showing its yellow platform

Some things you hear about all your life but never get to see. The lotus was in that category for me until I moved to Southern California.

It truly is majestic. I understand now why the poets of the East have always loved the lotus.

It is often compared to our sensitive and ever changing emotional heart, which opens and closes like the petals of the lotus in the sun or shade.

I love the little yellow stool in the center of the flower.

Eastern religions often picture gods and goddesses seated there.

The whole flower is about the size of a grapefruit, and the seed pods are as fascinating as the flowers.

The modern showerhead must have borrowed its design from here.

Each "nozzle" is a lotus seed.

Both the lotus and the water lily belong to the order Nymphaeales and share the uncanny ability to shed water.

H2O behaves like mercury, pooling in the center of a lotus leaf.

Can you imagine a raincoat or umbrella made of leaves like this?

You would never have to shake it out.

By the way, the lotus and the water lily both have a very subtle and beautiful aroma.
