Some things you hear about all your life but never get to see. The lotus was in that category for me until I moved to Southern California.
It truly is majestic. I understand now why the poets of the East have always loved the lotus. |
It is often compared to our sensitive and ever changing emotional heart, which opens and closes like the petals of the lotus in the sun or shade.
I love the little yellow stool in the center of the flower. |

Eastern religions often picture gods and goddesses seated there.
The whole flower is about the size of a grapefruit, and the seed pods are as fascinating as the flowers.
The modern showerhead must have borrowed its design from here.
Each "nozzle" is a lotus seed. |
Both the lotus and the water lily belong to the order Nymphaeales and share the uncanny ability to shed water.
H2O behaves like mercury, pooling in the center of a lotus leaf.

Can you imagine a raincoat or umbrella made of leaves like this?
You would never have to shake it out.
By the way, the lotus and the water lily both have a very subtle and beautiful aroma. |
