Everyone needs a place to get away completely every once in a while...
A place where there is no internet, no cell phone service, no black top, and nothing to do but swim and hike and use the body for a change. |
My step-dad and 11 other families bought this isolated piece of property on a lake in the Adirondacks back in the late 70's. We call it Highlands, and it has been well used by our family ever since.
A week hardly seems long enough to settle into the quiet lifestyle there. |

Of course, my step-dad keeps us busy chopping wood, replacing bridges, clearing trails and otherwise keeping out of trouble.
But I don't mind because I can pack a whole year's worth of exercise into one week this way! |
This year I saw a porcupine for the first time.
I was tempted to climb up for a closer look, but decided to use my better judgment.
