a live oak tree keeps green when all else is brown

Since I moved here to Southern California four months ago, not a drop of rain has fallen.

Hills which were green in May are golden brown these days.

In fact, the only sign of life is the solitary live oak tree, which I presume has roots to China.

This morning early, I found a fog hanging in the valley, which this oak tree used for playing hide and
seek with me.

I wondered if the fog provided any useful water for the tree, or if it merely made it feel the lack of rain.

Brown grasses rustled as I walked through them.

The only signs of life there were the seeds of next year's crop, which were dropped at every opportunity.

What I love about these hills is their graceful form and golden color.

Here the beauty of the earth is seen without distraction.  Trees serve only as embellishment when needed.

A small stand of live oaks peek from behind this bare grassy hill.

Nature amazes me with the fact that you can pare it down and down and down and still find beauty there.

No matter how much you take away, nature seems to have an endless reservoir of inspiration.
