Lilacs and Fading Tulips

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

The wind finally stopped blowing here and I was able to spend some time photographing garden flowers yesterday. The tulips are fading, but I found them to be as interesting in their old age as in their youth.

The lilacs are in their prime…

Apple Orchard

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

This morning I went out to take a few more pictures for my newsletter tomorrow. I headed down to the apple orchard because the apples are in full bloom. When I arrived, the beautiful light on the tall orchard grass caught my attention and added another dimension to the photo shoot.

I ended up spending an hour in the orchard, and printed many of the shots in black and white. In the end, I decide to use only today’s shots in tomorrow’s newsletter. The dandelion orchard photos will be saved for another time.

Guest Photographer: Sarah Pearce

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Yesterday evening I went out photographing with Blaine’s niece, Sarah. She had never used a camera in manual mode with a tripod, but she caught on very quickly. We spent most of our time in an apple orchard that is starting to bloom. The door photo is just across the street from Sarah’s house.

I hope you will enjoy Sarah’s photos:

Dandelion Orchard

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Yesterday I came across this beautiful peach orchard in bloom, with dandelions covering the earth. You can see more of these photos in the Straight From the Camera section of my website.

New Photos: Okanagan Sunflowers

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

I was out this morning for a short bit in the hills photographing what the locals here call Okanagan Sunflowers. They cover the hillsides here in early May and are as lovely as any garden flower.

You can see a few shots in the Straight From The Camera section of my site.

Plum Branches

I’ve got more new photos coming tomorrow… but here’s one I liked while editing.

More Frozen Orchards

Monday, April 21st, 2008

It turns out all the orchards are leaving their sprinklers on in the freezing weather. This morning I photographed this orchard just a 100 yards in back of us.

Apparently the ice protects the buds from hard frost. It seems a little like soaking a carpet to protect it from flood to me, but I don’t know much about growing fruit trees. The flower buds do look pretty ok. Who’da thunk it!

Check out the new photos at Straight From The Camera.

Frozen Orchard

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

This morning I got a call from Blaine’s sister, Bev, saying that there was an orchard covered with icicles down the road. It was cold last night and the orchardists left their sprinklers on to “protect” the flower buds from the frost.

When I arrived, I realized that it was the same orchard that I photographed last week with ice on it, but this time the icicles were much larger (about a foot long) and every branch of every tree was covered.

Check out all the photos at the Straight From The Camera section of my site.

If there’s someone you want to send icicles to, you’ve now got the greeting cards to do it!

New Photos: More Apricot Blossoms

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

I was out again this morning in the apricot orchard down the road. The blooms have opened completely now. It was a delightful hour just after sunrise.

New Photos: Apricot Blossoms

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

I just added some photos from this morning to the Straight From The Camera section of the website.

The weather has turned warm here. It was 73 F this afternoon. The apricot trees have popped all over town in the warm weather.

I met some friendly people who let me photograph in their garden. They even brought out an orchid from inside for me to photograph.

Check out the new photos and be the first to order a greeting card from these shots.
